#21312 new defect

USB Device unknown

Reported by: CrayZD Owned by:
Component: USB Version: VirtualBox-7.0.4
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

Windows7 x64 is installed on the guest system, after applying the VirtualBox 7.0.x update, there were problems with the USB device enumerator. If the memory on the guest system is less than 2068Mb, then everything works (found out experimentally). If you set more memory (2068Mb or more), then when connecting USB devices (barcode scanner, smartphone, etc.), error Code 43 occurs and the device manager identifies the equipment as USB/Unknown.

Thank you, CrazyZD! USB passthrough to two scanners in a Windows 7 guest now works under Virtualbox 7.0.4 in an openSUSE Tumbleweed host, thanks to the information in this bug report. Details: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1205737

This sounds like a bug in the scanner software or Windows 7. Can you confirm that the same issue appears with the latest VirtualBox 6.1 release to rule out any regressions anyway?

I had no problems with the 6.1.40 release or earlier 6.1 releases, and, in fact, never had problems of this type with USB passthrough in Virtualbox until 7.0.4 arrived. Also, I should have mentioned: the USB passthrough problem is identical with two separate Windows scanner software programs, one provided by HP for an HP scanner and another provided by Epson for an Epson scanner. Both report 'unknown device' errors, as noted in the openSUSE bug report linked above. If I adjust guest memory to be under 2068, as suggested by CrazyZD, the scanners and scanner software work properly in the Windows guest.
