Can't create VDI file from external hard drive

Description
System: Ubuntu Studio 22.04.1 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)
Trying to create a VDI file from an old hard drive. The hard drive sits in a USB cradle and shows up as an external drive at /dev/sba. When the process starts, VBoxManage creates the VDI file in the folder, but after a long time of processing, the VDI file is deleted at the end.
Any ideas are appreciated.
