#21068 new defect

VM crashes after a while when pressing Tab/Return in terminal

Description

Hi,

VirtualBox: 6.1.36 r152435 (Qt5.6.3)

I am on an Ubuntu 20.04 VM (running on a macOS host). I turn it on and open up its terminal (bash). After ~10-15 minutes of playing around, I press the tab key (for autocompletion). I've notices this also sometimes happens with the return key in a Find/Replace dialogue in CLion.

The VM freezes so I have to manually shut down.

The same happens when I am in zsh, so it's not the terminal itself.

Could you please help, Thanks, Mihai

Hi mihai_mc,

Note that you assigned 10.0 GB of RAM to a VM while host only has 7.7GB free.

@galitsyn: IDK if it's important here, but how would you interpret the continuous toggling between two display resolutions (2048x1033|1152)?

fth0, my guess would be that mihai_mc was setting VM window "in" and "out" of focus in a loop for a while. I am not sure if it is related though. From my point of view, I would not assign that much amount of RAM to the VM because host simply does not have that much to offer.

galitsyn, I'm completely with you regarding the amount of RAM (especially when a Linux VM is started from a saved state, needing the memory early ;)). Reducing the provided amount of RAM (and starting the VM from a powered-off state) is the first (and perhaps only necessary) step for mihai_mc.

On the other hand, I've seen a lot of VBox.log files since the focus-related log messages were added to VirtualBox, but they were usually not accompanied by log messages about changes of the host screen work area. I'm just wondering about this rarely seen behavior.
