Description

Hi

ArcaOS (an OEM OS/2 distribution) had been available on the market for four years now, and many users also uses VirtualBox to run ArcaOS as a guest. The request is to include ArcaOS 5.0 on "Type / Version" list of the VirtualBox GUI.

There is an specification of the settings, which varies from OS/2 and eComStation, on this page: https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/arcaos/installation-planning/virtual-machine-configuration/oracle-vm-virtualbox/

Also a patch had been produced with the requested change. (It is included on this ticket).

Regards

I've added "ArcaOS" to the list of OS/2 OSes, both on trunk and in the 6.1 branch. No fancy icon yet.

The suggestion to use AHCI as the default controller is rubbish as the 5.0.7 installation ISO defaults to only loading the IDE driver (Dani's), probably due to running in a VM.

Btw. one thing I would like to do is to get ArcaOS working with unattended installation, however it doesn't seem to be entirely straight forward and the documentation seems to be inadequate/misleading wrt response file(s). Any clues there would be appreciated, and should it work, we could reconsider using AHCI instead of IDE for disks and CDs.

I believe Lewis explicitly wanted AHCI because of the slow speed of the Dani driver. The problem seems to be that the installer doesn’t automatically add AHCI, one has to manually select it in the pre-boot menu, which isn’t exactly user friendly.

Maybe Martin can get ahold of Lewis.

Sorry to be so late to the party, and thanks so much for implementing this, Knut. :-)

The current implementation still is considerably non-optimal for ArcaOS, e.g., I/O APIC should be enabled, and AHCI really should be the default (the only reason the 5.0.7 installer defaults to DANI in this environment is because VBox defaults to IDE; with some coordination with the next release, we could easily change this behavior - on bare metal, we always attempt to load OS2AHCI first, and for the 5.1 beta, NVMe).

As for response file installation, indeed we are lacking decent documentation. I shall endeavor to update the wiki with details.
