Guru Meditation 1155 with v6.1.18 on Windows 10 host running Windows 98 guest

Description

Hi,

I am running the 64bit Version of VirtualBox 6.1.18 r142142 on Windows 10 Pro (20H2) and installed a fresh Windows 98 Second Edition as Guest VM. I use the default Windows 98 configuration and only modified it to set 256MB RAM and 32MB Video RAM.

The first time everything was running fine (no additional programs installed) but since yesterday I get a Guru Meditation 1155 (VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT). This happens sporadically but only during login. Once the system startup is finished everything is fine. Sporadically means that it sometimes works 2-3 times but then the other 5 times I get the Guru.

Regards, stauberix

What did you change inside the guest or in the VM config when the triple fault started appearing. You said that it ran fine initially.

I also thought what has changed but actually I cannot find anything. I also restored the original installation from my backup and installed another Windows 98 SE on a second VM. But the same on both - I sporadically get the Guru 1155.

And as I wrote it seems it happens only during startup. Once the startup is finished the system runs stable. I test some configuration changes but nothing helped so far. And it is also difficult to test because the Guru happens only sporadically.

Hyper-V is not installed on my Windows 10 host by the way.

In the meanwhile I tested it on another Windows 10 host with VirtualBox 6.0.14 and I have similar results. With this version I can disable the VT-x and then no Guru 1155 has been occured so far. However this is no options since its very slow and CPU consuming.

One more thing: Once the Guest is up and running I can do endless reboots of Windows 98 without any problems. It seems it happens only after a shutdown of the Guest. I installed Windows 98 with default APM not ACPI.

Its the Windows 98 welcome sound!

I configured the default SoundBlaster 16 emu and when it tries to play the welcome sound I sometimes get the Guru 1155 . I can reproduce it very good now and it happens with 6.1.18 and 6.0.14 .

It helps if I disable the sound in the settings dialog and it also helps if I only disable the audio playback. I also changed to ICH AC97 and installed the Realtek drivers but then the Windows 98 freezes at the same point (however without the Guru).

I don't need any sound right now but maybe the developers can fix this in future versions.
