Second virtual monitor not working
Reported by: | Nieko Punt | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | RDP | Version: | VirtualBox 1.6.4 |
Keywords: | monitor, multi, rdp | Cc: | punt@… |
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Windows |
Description
Host : Vista Ultimate SP1 Guest : XP SP3 VirtualBox: 1.6.4 VRDP Port : 6666 Monitors : 2 -VBoxManage modifyvm VMNAME -vrdpmulticon on
-VBoxManage modifyvm VMNAME -monitorcount 2
RDP Client: Vista RDP client Desktop : Extended to 2nd monitor Monitor 1 : @1\username (OK) Monitor 2 : @2\username (NOK)
I get a black screen (RDP client window) when connecting to screen 2. If I right click in the RDP client window I see a context menu in the primary screen suggesting that it mirrors rather than extends the primary screen.
Best regards, Nieko Punt.

How do you start the VM? Note that the multimonitor over RDP feature works only when the VM is started using VBoxHeadless (UserManual 9.6 Multiple monitors for the guest). Also the second monitor must be enabled in the guest (Display Properties/Settings).
Thank you for your comments. I indeed forgot to launch using VBHeadless. Finally I get 2 different screens each representing a part of the (extended desktop) but there are still problems. If I move a window from the left to right it does not show on the second monitor. Instead it comes in from the left again on the first monitor. Also there are a lot of redraw problems.

My multimonitor requirement would also be solved in case multimonitor support would be added to seamless mode (see "Seamless mode support for Multimonitor").

This of course should work and works fine here. When do you connect clients to the VM: at the start of booting or when the desktop appears? What are the display settings in the RDP client and in the guest (for both monitors)?

I uploaded a picture demonstrating what is going on:
-Time of connection: After hearing the welcome sound (so when desktop appears) -VM resolution : 800x600 on both monitors (monitor 2 extends monitor 2) -RDP resolution : 800x600 on both clients
Note how the explorer window does not appear on the right. Instead it reappears on the left. After moving the window there no proper screen redraw (see destroyed icons on the left side).

Please reopen if this problem persists with VirtualBox 2.2.4 or VirtualBox 3.0.0. There were some RDP fixes in the last release and your configuration works fine here.

cornbread, are you sure you are talking about the same issue (2 guest monitors)? If so, please could you attach a VBox.log file of such a session with two guest monitors? And please attach the command line how you accessed the two guest monitors.

v4.0 has many updates in the multi-monitor area.
Can you please try it?
