#20084 new defect

Virtual Box issues with kernel 5.9.12-lp152.50-preempt?

Reported by: Reinardo Owned by:
Component: VMM Version: VirtualBox 6.1.16
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Solaris Host type: Linux

Description

Hi, folks,

I am encountering problems when using the kernel version described in the summary. I am running opensuse-Linux 15.2 as host and Solaris 11.4 as guest. (an image provided by Oracle) Installation of VirtualBox 6.1.16 goes fine, just booting the Solaris virtual machine doesn´t happen, it just hangs when reaching 20%. Any ideas?

Yours,

Reinhard

I think I may have the same issue. It's reproducible on Gentoo, with all VMs (Windows) + a freshly-created one, which does not yet have any OS but is supposed to boot from the ISO (Gentoo Linux).

Have attached dmesg.log, VBox.log and VBoxSVC.log on Gentoo.

Besides this, I had to fix the permission of /dev/vboxdrv* files manually to 666.

Similar bug reporting from an Arch Linux user:

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/68541?project=5&openedfrom=-1+week

Interestingly, all three (OP, the Arch user, and I) are Ryzen users.

With Version 6.1.17 r141968 (Qt5.6.1) of VirtualBox, my Solaris machine runs just fine!!

Thank you!!

stephen.kim: "Interestingly, all three (OP, the Arch user, and I) are Ryzen users".

For as far as I am aware the problem as I reported in https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/20021 is the same as the one at hand. I indicated there that the problem is Ryzen-specific.
I tested VB 6.1.17 r141968 against my kernel 5.10.1: the problem persists.

Update:

I just installed VirtualBox version 6.1.17 r141968 (Qt5.6.1) and as far as I can see, it works. Kernel version is: 5.3.18-lp152.57-preempt. If anybody needs more info, please tell me which file to upload. Thanks!
