Guest Additions Video Driver

Description

Having the Guest Additions Video Driver provides MUCH greater stability to the VM. However, the Additions drivers do not support 256 color support (8bit). It is capable of 16 colors, 16, 24 and 32bit. Many applications (some older games for instance) still require 256 color mode. If the driver is installed, using the XP Compatibility mode is useless, becase 256 colors isn't even listed as an option. A solution is to uninstall the Addition drivers and use XP's generic video drivers. However, I have found that using the generic driver causes much too many memory corruption errors that will abort VirtualBox repeatedly. It would be great if I can have the Guest Additions installed AND have 256 color support. Thank you!

I'm afraid that we won't be able to add a 256 colour mode to the additions in the foreseeable future (the usual problem - no paying customers interested in it). You might want to look into doing it yourself (the driver code is in src/VBox/Additions/WINNT/Graphics; it shouldn't be too much work to extend the existing code), or alternatively to look for someone in the community who would be interested in doing it.

By the way, you are welcome to open a separate ticket concerning the memory corruption you mentioned (also specify which host, which version of XP as guest and whether it is VirtualBox or the XP guest which crashes).

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
