No idea why this is failing, has worked prior to this point. Will wait before taking further action, such as starting without attempting to restore session until receive input about the problem.

Follow-up:
I saw a similar problem reported where a system restart corrected the failure. Given this I restarted linux and tried again this morning. The virtual session came up properly.
So although I have no idea why this occurred, at least restarting linux allowed me to recover from it.
