OSX Majove host panic reboots

Reported by: gkholman Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 5.2.20
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description (last modified by klaus) (diff)

Copied below is the eighth of eight OSX Panic Reports since installing OSX Majove seven days ago.

So far, of all of my software, only VirtualBoxVM has triggered Panic reboots. Of course this is critical as I lose all of my open work.

There is no rhyme nor reason of when the Panic reboot happens. I haven't found any pattern in my applications or my keystrokes or my pointer movements. It just happens when I least expect it.

I can provide the other seven reports if needed, but the all read almost identically.

I had zero problems with High Sierra. The problems began within hours after installing Majove.

My search of VirtualBox tickets doesn't reveal any others regarding Majove.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Replying to gkholman:

Copied below is the eighth of eight OSX Panic Reports since installing OSX Majove seven days ago.

Please do not Copy/Paste text directly. Use a text file, zipped or not. It makes the ticket difficult to read, mainly because you didn't properly format the text. You missed the "Preview" button... ;)

My search of VirtualBox tickets doesn't reveal any others regarding Majove.

Not really true, I can point you to a couple in the forums at least. But I suspect that your problem isn't 10.14, but SoundFlower:

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower	2

This piece of software hasn't been updated since 10.10 and has been shown to cause issues with VirtualBox. Uninstall that and see if the kernel panics continue...

BTW, it's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the  VirtualBox forums, a lot more eyes there. More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of.

For example, if yours turns out to be SoundFlower originated, it will be most probably be not a bug and someone from the developers has to deal with it and close it as "Invalid".

Thank you for the guidance regarding posting to different fora.

I will remove Soundflower and report if there is a problem.

I appreciate the assistance.

I don't know if is the same issue that happens to me but is the only result that pops out when i search for something similar in google.

This also started happening to me when the sistem updated to Mojave, and also I couldn't replicate the problem at first, but the

gave me a hint, tried turning off the keyboard when the guest (Windows 7) machine where in the spotlight and it crashed. Consequent tries show the same result. The keyboard for some reason turns off (batteries issues or so) and if the guest window happens to be in the spotlight the sistems crashes.

I also have a  post in the forum detailing how I am able to reproduce this kernel panic on demand (100% success rate, though it also happens sporadically even if I make no effort to provoke it, which is why this is such a serious problem). I'll echo a bit below, but please see my  post for my full kernel panic report. The BSD process name corresponding to current thread is always VirtualBoxVM, and the kernel extensions in backtrace are always and org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv. I do not have Soundflower, if that's relevant to gkholman and socratic.

System: iMac 2015, bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, host OS Mac OS X 10.14.3 (Mojave), VirtualBox 5.2.26 and 6.0.4 (occurs in both), Windows XP and 7 guest OS (occurs in both)

To provoke the kernel panic:

  • Start any virtual machine, and make sure it is the active window
  • Switch bluetooth keyboard and trackpad off and back on

I have the exact same problem on my MacBook Pro while running the current version of 64-bit Windows Server 2019. It made it through installation and configuration, but after the reboot, I can't get past the login password. When I strike the first key of my password the host macOS crashes with the same error. This is consistently repeatable.

There is a discussion (as it was noted) in the forums where we try to triage the situation and see which Apple keyboards/mice/tablets this affects.
