VB 5.2.6 Audio issues

Reported by: PalsyP Owned by: pentagonik
Component: audio Version: VirtualBox 5.2.6
Keywords: audio, guest Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

I think v5.2.6 messed up the audio somehow - after a while, it goes distorted & echo-y - I only use audio in the browser, not sure via WMP/etc.

Tried un-ticking "Audio Input" (new on Status Bar), no dice.

Even tried reverting to 5.2.2, but the GUI still looks like 5.2.6.

I made a capture of what this audio on VB does now... http://www.screencast.com/t/98kW3skJVejU you can hear it after 23 secs

Is this just me?

I also have audio issues with VirtualBox 5.1.32.

Host: Windows 7

Guests: Windows XP / Windows 7

Audio is played 3x faster on Windows XP guest. (guest_XP.wma @ 0:16/0:44)

Audio is played with noise after replaying for a few times on Windows 7 guest. (guest_7.wma @ 1:33)

Reverting to 5.1.30 fixes audio issues.

I restored VirtualBox.xml and vbox files from the backup created before updating to 5.1.32.

In my experience downgrading to 5.1 train works when the VMs are in shutdown. Saved VMs however fail to start after downgrade.

Just because I'm on the notification for the bug: you don't have to press "Reply" every time when you want to answer and you don't need to quote another message, or parts of it; you can simply reply, especially if you're replying to the previous message. We're in level 3 quoting already...

I have some updates.

If I disable and enable Audio Output (on the status bar) when the audio gets really bad, this fixes it a bit, but only for a while, then rinse, repeat.

So, these 2 new options, Audio Output and Audio Input, what is the point of them? Why did they get added? To which version? Obviously, these, AFAICS, are (contributing to) the reasons for my issue..... I only noticed these options in 5.2.6.....

This is causing me all kinds of grief. I only use audio in a web browser, and normally it is youtube. I will get really bad crackling when a video first starts. Then it will subside for the most part. Then it slowly builds. I have to pause what ever is playing for about 30 seconds and then it will reset. Disabling audio output works about as well as pausing does.

Please have a try with the latest 5.2 test build 120822, which is located here: Testbuilds. Thank you!

I use host type windows, guest type linux mint 18.3 and had the same issue since this problem was discovered. It seems to be fixed with your testbuild now.

I use LMDE 64 bit host and Windows 10 64 bit client and the 120882 build solves the sound issue I had with 5.2.6 version.

Just want to say that I also had issues with 5.1.32.

I initially tested with VBoxGuestAdditions_5.1.33-120328.iso. Either no audio or audio plays chipmunk-fast for a few seconds then halts.

I retested with VBoxGuestAdditions_5.1.33-120529.iso. Not working either.

Changing from AC97 to Intel HD audio (still on 5.1.33-120529) seems to work.

@JEBjames The Guest Additions are not even closely related to the audio issues -- it does not matter which versions are installed on the guests.

Please try the latest Testbuilds. Thanks.

I tried VirtualBox 5.1.34 on Windows 7 host.

Windows 7 guest:

Plays normally for about 1.3 hours, and then buzzes until I pause the guest.

No audio after resuming the guest.

Windows XP guest:

Audio is still played much faster than normal.

This occurs in VirtualBox 5.1.32 and 5.1.34 but not 5.2.6.
