scaled mode in ubuntu 17.10

Description
Depending on the state (seems scaled first). when going back to normal mode, the VM is not responsive to keystrokes. They appear to buffer, when returning to scaled mode they will then show up.
Speculation is on the new WM that comes with 171.0
Saw with with 5.1.28, 5.2.0 and 5.2.2
