The problem:

Using VirtualBox v5.1.28 [VirtualBox-5.1.28-117968-Win.exe] with the corresponding extension pack, also previous versions, also with two other, GeForce 6200 nVidia cards, I was experiencing the following:

  1. occasional screen blanking, which, after a few seconds, was restored
  1. my graphics card driver was spontaneously reverting to VGASave [the Microsoft “failsafe” generic driver, that is not able to provide my graphics card & monitor optimal native resolution] after rebooting my system, but a re-installation of the driver package would return things to normal

After having upgraded to the current version of VirtualBox [VirtualBox-5.2.0-118431-Win.exe (with the corresponding extension pack)] my graphics card driver permanently reverted to the VGASave and consistently does so immediately after I install VirtualBox, ever since [I have also tried installing two previous versions, v5.1.30 and v5.0.40, to no avail]. After I uninstall VirtualBox, things magically return to normal.
