#16880 new defect

USBPROXY Getting USB descriptor failed with error 31

Reported by: M. Owned by:
Component: USB Version: VirtualBox 5.1.22
Keywords: USBPROXY error 31 Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

I cannot use the USB extension pack anymore. It was working fine a few weeks ago but now I get this error whenever I try to add a USB device (from the host) to the guest machine:

USBPROXY Getting USB descriptor failed with error 31

The USB device disappears from the host but dooes not appear on the guest. I tried to downgrade to older versions of VirtualBox but it does not work.

The USB devices are working fine on the host.

Both host and guest run Windows 10 X64 Creator Update.

Please attach a VBox.log file of such a VM session together with the VBoxSVC.log file. The latter can be found at c:\users\USERNAME\.VirtualBox\VBoxSVC.log. Or open a cmd.exe window and execute

\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxBugReport VMNAME

where VMNAME is the name of the VM you are trying to start. That tool will collect the necessary logs and create an archive. Please attach this archive (or the separate files from above) to this ticket (use Attach file). Thank you!

VBoxBugReport FIle For Comment to Ticket #16880

Dear VBox Community,

This ticket appears to the latest regarding the "Getting USB descriptor fialed with error 31" and corresponding "USB: Unknown USB device detected (idVendor: 0x0000, idProduct: 0x0000)" message so I'm not going to start a new ticket.

The host is a ThinkPad T470 running Windows 10.0.15063 and all of the unknown devices are integrated components of the ThinkPad:

idVendor: 0x0bda, idProduct: 0x0316 - Realtek USB 3.0 Card Reader

idVendor: 0x138a, idProduct: 0x0097 - Synaptics WBDI(SGX enabled)

idVendor: 0x13d3, idProduct: 0x5619 - Integrated Camera

idVendor: 0x1d5c, idProduct: 0x2000 - Fresco Logic FL2000 USB Display Adapter

idVendor: 0x2386, idProduct: 0x310e - HID-compliant touch screen

idVendor: 0x8087, idProduct: 0x0a2b - Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)

I have attached a VBoxBugReport (https://www.virtualbox.org/attachment/ticket/16880/2017-11-05-14-51-03-bugreport.tgz) for your use. I want to think the USB issues are related to Microsoft's version of Intel's USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller, however, there are many other subordinate USB devices that don't have issues.

Interestingly, I started researching this issue because I get the dreaded USB device "Busy" status and the "Capture" status related to my Plantronics Savi 7xx-M headset filter without the device being usable in my VM. Interestingly, the Integrated Camera works as expected from the Devices -> Webcam interface, even though the camera is not recognized USB device.

I've tried all the historical remedies with no success and appreciate your assistance.

Kind regards, Doc_Dan

Please read the following thread: USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts. If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please head to the forums, and follow the advice of the last post. Please be sure to mention that you came from the bug tracker and include the ticket number.

Thanks socratis. I apologize for my apparent impoliteness in commenting on this ticket.

I'm sorry, but I found your direction to "head to the forums and follow the advice of the last post" to be rather ambiguous. The only obvious choice I found was for "VirtualBox on Windows Hosts" with the only forum being "VirtualBox on Windows pre-releases".

Regardless, I will endeavor to find a more appropriate place to post regarding the following VirtualBox errors I'm experiencing:

1) "Getting USB descriptor failed with error 31", and 2) "USB: Unknown USB device detected (idVendor: 0x0000, idProduct: 0x0000)"

Kind regards, Doc_Dan
