#16813 new defect

/dev/tty: No such device or address

Reported by: kaisbe Owned by:
Component: guest additions Version: VirtualBox 5.1.22
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: all Host type: Linux

Description

I've got an error message thrown by VBox->Preferences->Extensions, whenever trying to upgrade the VBox Extension Package:

"The installer failed with exit code 127: Error creating textual authentication agent: Error opening current controlling terminal for the process (`/dev/tty'): No such device or address."

This seems little bit weird since /dev/tty is part of the system:

ls /dev/tty
/dev/tty

I need some help regarding this issue.

Please attach the VBoxSVC.log file after you tried this upgrade. You can find this file in ~/.VirtualBox/VBoxSVC.log or ~/.config/VirtualBox/VBoxSVC.log

This issue gets solved after installing policykit, so that VirtualBox asks for password and gets the privileges for updating the extension package. Yet, the message "/dev/tty: No such device or address" is wrong, so I'm considering it as a bug - I think that VBox should show "Error: policykit is not installed" instead, when it is not installed.
