5.1.14 verry slow on 4770k (5.1.12 and older are faster)
Reported by: | LMS23 | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | guest additions/x11/graphics | Version: | VirtualBox 5.1.14 |
Keywords: | 4770k display graphic 3D acceleration | Cc: | |
Guest type: | all | Host type: | Windows |
Description
Since the update to 5.1.14, my virtual machines are slower than before.
It affects both Windows (Win7 and Win10) and Linux (Ubuntu/Lubuntu 16.10) guests.
It is mainly about the user interface, this is noticeably slower. I tried it with and without 3D acceleration.
After a downgrade of the VirtualBox (5.1.12 or older) the systems are faster again.
My Setup:
- Intel i7 4770k @ 4 Ghz
- 32 GB RAM (4x8)
- GA-Z87X-OC
- All VM Disks on SSD
- Windows 10 PRO 1607

Logfile Lubuntu 16.10 VM with 5.1.14

Thanks for the logs. So far I have no real idea. I cannot imagine how a 5.1.14 change could have such an influence to the experienced performance.
I saw that with the 5.1.12 VM large pages were disabled because it took too long to allocate them (probably host memory too fragmented, nothing unusual). Could you try if the VM performs better if you do
VBoxManage modifyvm "Ubuntu x64" --largepages off
before you start your VM?

The problem is not the overall performance. The problem is the user interface and video performance. Now view a youtube video in a virtual machine is not possible. And the entire work does not smooth!

Update: With the new windows update (1703, Build 15063.13) its better but not like before. Can the 4770k be the problem? (the K have not all Virtualization Technology)

Found the error. Was NOT Virtual Box, was "Avast Internet Security".
See here https://forum.avast.com/?topic=196714.0 and https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=131508.msg974706#msg974706
"To solve this problem just uncheck "hardware virtualization" checkbox on AvastUI troubleshooting page. (reboot is required to propagate this setting change)"
"Um das Problem zu beheben einfach den Haken bei "Hardware-unterstützte Virtualisierung aktivieren" raus nehmen und neu starten (Neustart ist Pflicht)"
Then the VMs work again as desired. Now is only the question whether one can clarify that BOTH works. So the virtual machines and also the complete range of functions of AVAST.

Thanks for this information. So I will close this ticket.
I assume that you did not change any VM setting after upgrading from 5.1.12 to 5.1.14? Please attach a VBox.log file of at least one VM which you run with VBox 5.1.14. In ideal case also the VBox.log file from the same VM running on VBox 5.1.12.
