#16486 new defect

VirtualBox on macOS crashes when laptop suspends/resumes

Reported by: Jason Hagar Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 5.1.14
Keywords: os x macos crash Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description

I have a Macbook Pro (2015 retina display, switchable graphics) running a Windows 10 guest that crashes frequently when the laptop decides to suspend. Usually this is associated with me unplugging external displays and power while the lid is closed. However, it can happen even without the external displays, and just the laptop itself going to sleep.

I have tried:

  • Reducing virtual CPUs to 1 and RAM to 4096.
  • Enabling and disabling switchable graphics
  • 2D acceleration and no 2D acceleration
  • VirtualBox 5.1.8 and 5.1.14 (guest additions always at the appropriate matching level)
  • Two external displays, one external display, no external display

I cannot solve the problem, and the regular crashes are causing major interruptions. I can't always control when the laptop suspends, as the power cord might be bumped or I might have it with me during a meeting and long enough gap between usage results in sleep.

I have attached the logs and macOS problem report from both 5.1.8 and 5.1.14.

Crashes do not occur on 5.0.32. Instead, VirtualBox pauses the VM execution safely, and automatically resumes when coming out of sleep. Something broke in 5.1.x with the host going to sleep.

I spoke too soon, my guest on VB 5.0.32 crashed today. I did make sure to pause it first, but that didn't help.

I'm seeing this problem on a new 15" MacBook Pro with macOS Sierra (10.12.6) running an Ubuntu (16.04) guest.

However I did not have this problem on my older 13" MacBook Pro (circa 2014 I think) running 10.12.6 and the same guest image.

Using VirtualBox 5.1.26 r117224 (Qt5.6.2).

Your crash reporti ndicates an audio related crash. Please check if the latest test build fixes your problem. It contains a fix for an audio crash which was not yet fixed in 5.1.26.

The test build 5.1.27 r117576 (Qt5.6.2) seems to fix the issue I've been seeing (crash on disconnecting external display while MacBook is closed.)
