Just to get the terminology right:

  • The Extension Pack get installed on the host and it has to match the VirtualBox version. It provides functionality such as USB2-3, Webcam, VRDP, PXE, Encryption.
  • The Guest Additions get installed on the guest and it would be good to match the VirtualBox version. It provides functionality such as shared folders, shared clipboard, drag and drop, pointer sharing, enhanced graphics support.

There's no such thing as "Guest Extensions" or "Guest Extension Pack".

Socratis, thank you, I almost overlooked this due to the "extension pack" keyword.

horvan, could you please provide a log file for the machine? The log file contains a lot of useful information about both the host and the guest systems as well as information about what happened during a particular machine run. Could you also provide a bit more detail about what you are seeing?

Just a random guess, but early 4.8 kernels (I am not even sure if they have released a 4.8 kernel with the fix yet) contain a bug which makes them hang in 32-bit VirtualBox machines unless you enable the "I/O APIC".
