#16220 new defect

Improper font scaling in VB Manager

Reported by: Aren Cambre Owned by:
Component: GUI Version: VirtualBox 5.1.10
Keywords: font, scaling Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: Windows

Description

I am running Windows 10 Professional on a Surface Pro 4. The VirtualBox Manager window has improper font scaling on my main display, a "normal" DPI external monitor. See attached image VirtualBox Manager on external monitor.png. If I drag the window to the Surface Pro 4's internal window, it looks worse; see VirtualBox Manager on Surface Pro 4 monitor.png.

BACKGROUND: In my current configuration, the Surface Pro 4 boots with its Surface Dock attached. It boots into a situation where an external, 1920x1080 monitor is the primary monitor; the built-in monitor is a secondary monitor. (It always boots this way if the Surface Dock is connected per my intentional configuration of Windows's display settings.) All applications, except VirtualBox, have fonts scaled properly for this normal resolution, main monitor.

This may relate to #9864, an old ticket.

Please add a virtual machine log file - it contains a lot of useful information about your host system.

Will do next time I spot this. What I've noticed is that when VirtualBox's font scaling is off, so is Notepad++'s scaling. What is the commonality?

I have the same font issue. When it appears in VirtualBox Manager it also appears in the tab titles in Notepad++, like noted above, and some other applications. What they all have in common, I think, is that they are cross platform applications, maybe apps made with Qt.

I once got this issue when I installed additional fonts for Xming from here: http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/, the Xming-fonts package. When I removed the fonts the problem disappeared.

Now the issue is back. I think it was after a Windows 10 update, but not 100% sure if it is related to that.

I am using VirtualBox 5.1.30 on Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB, version 1607.

I am able to reproduce this. It is caused when I set an external monitor on my laptop as my main screen. When I have the laptop screen as the main screen and the external monitor attached, it does not reproduce, neither does it reproduce with no external monitor. You have to reboot for the font change to take effect, i.e. between reconfiguring your display setup in Windows.

I saw a discussion about this on a Qt forum, where it was suggested to test if the issue appears (with some other app) when only one monitor is used. I suspect it is most likely a Qt bug/issue, and not directly related to VirtualBox.

2yrs later: This is now happening to me after I had rdp'd to the host computer (both Win10pro/x64) from home and had VirtualBox Manager already open. After that, I cannot get the font back to normal. For the question "has it occurred anywhere else?" Yes. The lightshotscreenshot app's save file dialog box, which I just noticed attaching the lidicrousfont.jpg file. All other save file dialog boxes and windows appear with normal font/icons.
