#16107 new defect

Random Freeze of Ubuntu 16.04 guest under 16.04 Host

Reported by: Andreas P Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 5.1.6
Keywords: ubuntu freeze Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Linux

Description

I encouter random freezes of a 16.04 guest system under a 16.04 host system.

This seems not to be new in the 5.1 versions as I had this problem in previous versions, too. The same guest system was working fine before the update to Ubuntu 16.04 (The box was 14.04 before).

Unfortunately I do not find a pattern when the box freezes. Sometimes it happens soon after the start of the box, sometimes the box runs stable for 1-2 days. The guest system just freezes.

  • From a first look the log looks OK.
  • You have VirtualBox 5.1.6 coupled with Guest Additions 5.0.18_Ubuntu. That's the fork ones, not the official ones. You still have the ISO in the tray, why don't you update? That alone may very well be the source of the freezes.
  • You have a lot of snapshots. Not an immediate problem, just mentioning it, because they're plenty...
  • You're allocating 5000 MB, plus 64 vRAM, plus overhead. You have 1.5 GB after you've started the VM, but still after that many hours of operation the host's cache might be biting you and starving your host.
  • Finally, may I suggest something? It's usually better and faster, if problems like this one (configuration) get first addressed in the forums (https://forums.virtualbox.org/). More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of.

Thanks for the comments.

I noiced that I have the old guest additions - which is strange because I started the install from the guest ISO, it told me that it did install the the guest additions - but obviously it did not. Can you tell me how to explecitely get rid of the ubuntu additions?

Andreas, I have latest ones installed under Ubuntu and I have the same problem. I doubt the guest additions cause the freezes. I first solved it by setting Other64bit OS in the settings, but later I found out that the problem may be related to KVM.

Try this and let us know if it fixes your issue:

Go to VM settings -> System -> Acceleration and set 'Paravirtualization Interface' as 'Minimal' then try again.

There seem to be a bug in VirtualBox KVM in my opinion.

Your issue is probably duplicate of my ticket: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/16024 and also https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15525

Also see: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=79595&p=376504#p376504

This problem seem to be popping up regularly and the usual response seem to be 'update guest additions'. I think they could have written a script to parse uploaded vbox logs and send automatic reply to tickets to update vbox guest additions, would save a lot of time :)

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
