#15828 new defect

Desktop shortcuts (Alias) not working on OSX Host (10.9.5) after updating to 5.1.4.

Reported by: Gregg Haines Owned by:
Component: host support Version: VirtualBox 5.1.4
Keywords: Alias, Shortcut Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description

I have two VMs (Win7 and WinXP) that I always start from shortcuts I have on my desktop (properly created from the "Create Alias on Desktop" - selected from the Machine Menu of the Virtualbox Manager). These shortcuts no longer work (either with or without Virtualbox running) after updating to 5.1.4. Even deleted the existing shortcuts and recreated them using 5.1.4 without any luck.

No error messages are generated, the shortcut icons only blink when I double click on them and nothing else happens.

The VMs start o.k. from the Virtualbox Manager and function normally from that point.

Confirmed with 5.1.2 and 5.1.4 on 10.9.5. The thing is that this bug appeared during the beta of 5.1 (https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=78524) and it got fixed. I guess it crept back again.

Seeing the same on OSX 10.11.6 after the update to v5.1.4

5.1.6 appears to have solved this issue for me.

From the changelog:

GUI: fixed issue with opening '.vbox' files and it's aliases

5.1.6 update has solved the problem for me - shortcuts working fine now.

There is still one problem: The shortcuts are assigned to a particular .vbox file. For safety reasons VBox renames the old setting file before writing a new setting file which contains updated settings. So after you changed a VM setting, the shortcut will point to the .vbox-prev settings file which isn't right of course. We are working on a fix.
