#15751 new defect

Windows VM host crashes randomly, when using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and 3D is enabled

Reported by: Smoetje Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 5.1.2

Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

I have an Ubuntu 16.04 freshly installed on my system. Randomly, the VirtualBox host crashes with the following data:

"Virtualbox.exe - Application Error"

"The instruction at 0xd953b275 referenced memory at 0x00000088. The memory could not be read".

After a few reinstalls, and searching different settings I quickly figured-out, disabling the 3D acceleration was responsible. Disabling it and the random crashes were completely gone.

Tried to downgrade to the lastest build of version 5.0, configuring sw + virtual machine with the right additions, but the exact same (random) error occurs. Browsing several forums, 1 hint I tried were the graphics drivers. I installed a few different revisions (Intel HD Graphics), now using version 10.18.14.4414

But doesn't resolve the issue.

I checked the LOG files, as well the VBoxHardening.log file and when the crash occurs, the following 2 lines appear which i assume may be related ...

Since the Virtualbox host itself crashes, I clearly assume it should be some kind of bug when using the 3D enabled, which is in fact handy in Ubuntu desktop environments (drastically increases performance)...

To debug these crashes we need a Windows application dump, see here.

I have the same problem. But disabling 3d-Accelerations didn't help.

For the dump see attachement. Thanks. Regards Martin

I'm having the same problem.

I can reproduce the crash reliably by resizing the guest window after logging in to Unity. Logging in to XFCE, the crash occurs but quite unpredictably i.e. not upon resizing the guest window. Similar to the OP, this is only when 3D acceleration is enabled -- disabling 3D acceleration fixes this issue.

In case it's relevant, I also have an Intel HD Graphics 4400 card, running driver version 10.18.14.4432 - the latest one provided by Dell for my machine.
