Description
I suspect this comes from the switch to Qt5 that's incompatible with KDE4, but if so that should have been announced with a warning.

I've switched from kwin_gles and opengl3.1 compositing to xrender with native qt but it doesn't matter. seamless mode crashes kwin. Linux mint 17.3 kde qt 4.8. The gui, full screen, and windowed modes are fine. I like seamless...

The problem is specific to kwin, as using gnome lets seamless mode work perfectly. I'm not sure if it's my particular kwin setup or not, but will try to track down the problem.

Do I understand correctly that it is kwin, not VirtualBox that is crashing here? I know this may sound like I am fobbing you off (I admit it, I am), but would it not make more sense to investigate this as a kwin bug? Out of interest, is kwin4 still supported by someone?

I'm not really sure, but it doesn't happen with kwin5 (nor osx) and it only happens if kwin4 is the window manager. Identical everything else without kwin and VB 5.1.x works fine in seamless mode.
It's kwin4, as it happens on all the machines I've tried. I've only tested nvidia latest drivers, but will test nouveau kwin4 tonight.

OK, seamless is perfect on kwin4 linux host on a macbook pro using intel mesa video drivers. SO, now we know it's not a kwin problem, not an nvidia problem, and not a VirtualBox problem. It's some hairy interaction that I'm not sure how to investigate further. n
So, fobbing off is acceptable, but I'd love to get some hints on how to trace this weirdness.
Thanks either way, Matthew

Summary: | Virtualbox 5.1 crashes kwin (kde4) when win7 guest is switched to seamless mode → Virtualbox 5.1 crashes kwin (kde4) when win7 guest is switched to seamless mode -> not a VirtualBox crash |
For a start you need to find someone who feels responsible for KWin4, since that is the process which is crashing. I suspect that the original author has moved on and will tell you to use KWin5, but if you got it from a distribution you may be able to get them interested the crash. You said you were going to try Nouveau; if that does not crash it would point at the NVidia drivers.
I'm afraid though I will have to close this as not a VirtualBox bug.

It's still a functional regression from 5.0, whether a VB bug or not. 5.1.4 has the same issue.

Have you tried the nouveau drivers like you were going to? You have to understand that we are not likely to start investigating a bug in a different application which is known to affect one person (or even two or three) because the previous version of our software happened not to trigger it.
