Vbox 5.1 fails to show its UI if kernel modules are not installed

Description

I installed VirtualBox-5.1.0-108711-Linux_amd64.run and while previous versions of VirtualBox ran just fine without installed kernel modules, version 5.1 never starts while in console you get an endless stream of the same error:

WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (4.5.5-ic64) or it failed to
load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by

           sudo /sbin/vboxconfig

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

I'd like the previous behavior to be reinstated: you can run VBox GUI but when you want to start any VM, this message is shown.

That's certainly annoying but not a blocker.

I cannot reproduce your problem. Just installed the 5.1.0 Linux .run package locally, unloaded the VBox drivers and tried to start the GUI.

Maybe the VBox process is crashing for some reason?

I've discovered why I had this problem.

For some reasons I had a /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox file lying around while the rest of the application was deleted and a new one installed into /opt/VirtualBox.

This is quite a weird situation, so I guess this bug report is invalid and might be closed.
