Ubuntu doesn't get to desktop when 3D acceleration is enabled

Description
I have guest additions with 3D acceleration enabled. The client is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
When launching Ubuntu, I can log in but it doesn't make it all the way through to the full desktop. The OS is basically unusable.
