#14718 new defect
guest window resizes to a very minimal size (vertically)
Reported by: | Wolfgang Rosenauer | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | GUI | Version: | VirtualBox 5.0.6 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | all | Host type: | Linux |
Description
This started when I upgraded from 4.3.30 to 5.0.6 using RPMs for openSUSE 13.2 as provided by virtualbox.org. Every guest resize event leads to the host window to become very small (height is very minimal; width also but not that much). I can provide a screenshot when required. This happens for every guest system (Windows, Linux etc). For Windows where the default is that the guest resizes to adapt to the host window it's worst because every resize of the host window results in a resize event within the guest which immediately makes the host window small again. I have to disable the the automatic guest resizing to be able to do anything.

Host-A always repositions the window to 0,0 and resizes to something very small.
xprop shows for the small window: WM_NORMAL_HINTS(WM_SIZE_HINTS):
user specified location: 2, 2 program specified location: 2, 2 user specified size: 640 by 521 program specified size: 640 by 521 program specified minimum size: 293 by 113 window gravity: Static

I get a similar problem. It came after i updated the system.
I use i3 on Arch (a tiling window manager) and the virtual box windows get really small vertically. If i toggle the window between floating i can get it to show corretly. (Using auto reize guest window). But if i set the window to floating and try to resize the window with the mouse two things happen. 1: The window get instantly resized to the small vertical height. 2: The window get placed in the upper left part of the screen (0,0).
Another thing that changed is the cursor is distorted.
I have added two pictures showing the problems.

Same here on Manjarolinux with i3wm. v5.1.2 logfile and screenshot attached
comment:7 by , 9 years ago
Same here on arch linux with i3wm and virtualbox 5.1.2 (started with virtualbox 5.1).

Same issue is described here: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15863 My workaround is to restart i3

Is this still an issue for the original ticket reporter with VirtualBox 5.1? And for the others, can you check ticket #15863 to see if that is your issue?

worosen, could you please attach a log file from a machine run where you experience the resizing problems? You indicated in the description that this occurs for several different machines. Does it also happen if you create a new e.g. Ubuntu machine? And silly question, but I assume that you did check that you did not set a maximum size for your machine windows in the global settings?
Attached a new log from today.
The global settings have "automatic" window size. The effect still happens for absolutely every virtual machine I have (also for new ones). Just installed a new Debian recently showing the same behaviour.

Please attach a log after a run of a VM when you tried to resize and it went wrong. Please also attach the machine XML file (/home/bernhard/VirtualBox VMs/xfce-netinstall/xfce-netinstall.vbox in this case). Thank you.

And the VirtualBox main configuration file <home>/.config/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml
comment:15 by , 9 years ago
Actually these are all resizes triggered on your host system. Could it be that you have accidentally set up WindowMaker to try to force that size on VirtualBox windows?
This bug also affects me as well. Arch Linux & i3wm. However, in my case, it becomes small horizontally. As if there's a threshold on the width.

I have not configured anything on WindowMaker to pin VirtualBox windows to certain sizes. Actually the size also is not always the same. In addition to the information above I created a short video showing the actual behaviour which might give a better impression. The logs and video should match exactly. https://ox.an-netz.de/ajax/share/020896ba0c48244b208b1a9c48244683b290c8957fb23874/1/8/Nzg (will be available for a week)

Please try the current test builds<1>. They have an attempted fix for resizing problems with tiling window managers (ticket #15863) which might also be relevant here.
It's worse with the test version. Please see screenshot. The thin line is the guest window now and I haven't found a way to resize it at all.

And if you query the window information using xwininfo, what does it tell you?
Replying to michael:
And if you query the window information using xwininfo, what does it tell you?
Do you like to have those informations from the testbuild or from 5.1.8? I already had to roll back to 5.1.8 so need to do another test slot later probably.
I actually meant for the test build when you have time, but if you have reinstalled the other it would be nice to have them from that too.
VBoxManage controlvm "Windows 7" setvideomodehint 1920 1200 32
what happens is that the guest resolution changes and also the guest window changes but it just gets a bit wider (not to the 1200) and stays vertically the same tiny height. So something is reacting to resizes but only with very tiny window size changes.
New test builds (revision 111509)<1>, though I am not highly confident. Nonetheless, the xprop output with the test builds would be good to compare against the release output.
To be clear - is the first xprop.txt taken with a working release build?
The first xprop is from 5.1.8 which I wouldn't call "working" but at least I'm still able to manually resize the window so it covers the guest display. With 5.1.9 I cannot even grab the window anymore.

initial window (border) is wider but still just a thin line which cannot easily resized. It's possible to maximize via context menu though.
Is it possible to resize the window using the Alt-Space menu? But generally, if I understand correctly, the current state is still a regression over 5.1.8 from your point of view?

Please give build revision 111900 a try. This build does not contain any fix, just a temporary work-around (which can not be kept because it is known to cause other problems).

I have had the same problem since 5.1 running on i3wm. I just tried build revision 111900, and it looks like it fixed the problem for me, it now behaves the same as 5.0.26 (latest version that worked for me).
WM: i3wm
OS: Arch Linux
Working version: https://www.virtualbox.org/download/testcase/VirtualBox-5.1.9-111900-Linux_amd64.run

This ticket is actually about a WindowMaker regression in the 5.0 series (not 5.1). The current test builds are known to work with i3vm in tiling mode, I would appreciate a test in floating mode (but please write any results to ticket #15863, not to this one).

Fixed in following Window Maker commit
http://repo.or.cz/wmaker-crm.git/commit/6668715402a5d8e2ecda6702076a06bf8988721e
Just for completeness I'm using WindowMaker as window manager if that is of any relevance.
