#14560 new defect

Regression - networking broken after upgrade to 5.0.0 and also subsequent updates

Reported by: oldium Owned by:
Component: network/hostif Version: VirtualBox 5.0.4
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: all Host type: Windows

Description (last modified by Valery Ushakov)

This worked with 4.3.x, but the problem started with upgrade to 5.0.0 from 4.3.28, but continues with every minor update - after installation, start-up of every virtual machine reports:

Cannot connect to the network interface '\DEVICE\{C5EF3C32-2A5B-4649-B646-5A5D3A3BB319}'. The virtual network card will appear to work but the guest will not be able to connect. Please choose a different network in the network settings.

The problem is with VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter.

I tried to restart computer after update, but still the same problem.

Removing and re-adding VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter from VirtualBox menu does not help.

The Device Manager with "Show hidden devices" option enabled shows that "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport" has exclamation mark with detail "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)".

Please note that I am using 192.168.150.0/24 network for VirtualBox Host-Only adapter (IP 192.168.150.2, mask 255.255.255.0, DHCP 192.168.150.3, dynamic address from 192.168.150.100 to 192.168.150.199), because the default address 192.168.56.0/24 is my regular network.

When I uninstall and install VirtualBox, the "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport" device still reports the same problem. I need to uninstall VirtualBox first, reboot and install VirtualBox afterwards in order to get the networking up-and-running again (after changing the IP and DHCP of the Host-Only adapter from VirtualBox menu).

This is reproducible with every update, starting from 5.0.0.

I am using Windows 7.

Do you need more info from me?

Just to be precise, my network is 192.168.56.0 with mask 255.255.254.0 and gw 192.168.56.254.

To clarify - the problem you are reporting is with the installation of a newer versions. Right after the update host-only doesn't work for you and you need to use the workaround you describe. After the workaround host-only does work (until the next update). Is that correct?

It looks like you use some VPN client which is based on Citrix DNE (Deterministic Network Enhancer). Is that so?

Yes, correct. The host-only network breaks with update and gets working only after uninstall - reboot - install.

I have two VPN solutions installed - Cisco VPN client 5.0.07.0290 and Check Point SSL Network Extender Service 7.01.0000. This enhancer might come with Cisco VPN client, which pointed me to something else - I installed Cisco VPN client on 18.5.2015, but VirtualBox 4.3.28 on 15.5.2015 (this is the last update that worked for me), so it might be just coincidence that the networking broke with update to 5.0.x, which I tried on 10.7.2015 - the Cisco VPN was already there when I tried 5.0.

Could you try to unistall VirtualBox, uninstall Cisco VPN, then uninstall Citrix DNE, run their winfix tool (as described here, reboot, install VirtualBox, check if everything is ok and working as it should, install the latest DNE (as described on the same Citrix support page I linked before), then install Cisco VPN client? I have no issues with Cisco VPN client on my test box, but the client does not install any intermediate drivers, it uses a light-weight filter instead.

Thanks, but unfortunately I am not able to install DNE Update (installation ends with error while "writing installation information to disk" and I should check disk space - there is enough space, so this is nonsense). The network installation of Cisco VPN client was also not very successful (I needed to repeat installation multiple times), but at the end it worked. Now I uninstalled the VPN client and tried VirtualBox 5.0.2 and update to 5.0.4 and the networking works. So the problem is really in DNE from Citrix.

Question is why the first installation worked, but the update broke it.
