#14240 new defect

Oracle Linux 6.6 wont start on init 5 after install guest additions

Reported by: Antonio Cesar Rosa Owned by:
Component: guest additions Version: VirtualBox 4.3.28
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

Recently we upgrade our Oracle Linux 6.4 to Oracle Linux 6.6. Upgrade was fine. We were able to connect with no issues on Linux guest.

Then we try to upgrade the guest additions, in order to use mouse integration. Guest additions was installed successfully. Then we reboot the Linux guest. After this, we are not able anymore to use GUI to start the Linux. We are able to change the init to 3 and start the Linux, but when we use init 5, the Linux just hangs. If we deinstall the guest addition, then we can install Linux in GUI mode.

We are using Windows7 as host, and Oracle Linux 6.6 as guest. Running latest Virtual Box version, 4.3.28 r 100389. We did not find nothing in messages and dmesg output.

Please attach a log file from a run of the virtual machine. Does Xorg.*.log* on the guest contain anything of interest? If in doubt please attach it too.

Not reproducible here (Ubuntu 15.04 64-bit host). Could you please investigate a bit more? E.g. does it happen with a new VM, can you reproduce it with a different VM, can you find any other reports which might help understand this?

Hi,

I am using Oracle Linux. Can you try to reproduce the error on Oracle Linux? It is happening with all my Oracle Linux boxes. When I migrate them from 6.4 to 6.6 and reinstall the guest additions, I am not able to open X11 anymore.

Regards, Cesar

And can you reproduce this with a newly created machine, possibly by installing OL 6.4 on it and upgrading?

comment:8 by Michael Thayer, 9 years ago

Actually - which kernels and kernel versions are you running before and after the upgrade?

Interesting - I clearly did not look at your log file properly. X.Org is not finding the Additions driver for some reason, and is using the fall-back set-up with the old VESA driver - and that is crashing. It would be good to know what is going wrong with the Additions installation - could you reinstall them by running the installer on the console inside the guest and provide the console output? - but it looks at least from the log file like this is a bug in OL, probably inherited from RHEL, not in the Additions.
