VirtualBox Manager does not recognize installed ExtPack

Reported by: Kaio Owned by:
Component: USB Version: VirtualBox 4.3.28

Guest type: all Host type: Mac OS X

Description

After successful installing of ExtPack it is not possible to activate the USB 2.0 Controller for any type of VM. The VirtualBox Manager shows still a message that the ExtPack installation is required to use this function.

But the VBoxUSB.kext is successful loaded as one can check with kextstat (see screen shots).

Where did you download the extension pack from? The name of the extension pack you installed is wrong. The correct name would be "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" and this title would be presented in the GUI dialog as well as in "VBoxManage list extpacks". So I wonder why the title is differently presented in your setup.

I've downloaded it from the website but I must modify the package as I was not able to install it as described with spaces in the file name either via VBoxManage and via the GUI.

I've just figured out that the directory containing the extension pack has to be named as follows otherwise it will not work. /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/ExtensionPacks/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack

And the name in the ExtPack.xml has to be named with spaces as it is by default. <Name>Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack</Name>

So it looks like that the directory for the extension pack is hard coded somewhere in the code. That's odd because it was shown in the settings dialog as successful installed.

As it is working now for me the ticket can be closed.
