#14155 new defect

Double-click-hold doesn't work

Reported by: Constantine Dokolas Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.3.28
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

I had VBox 4.3.24 and updated to 4.3.28. Since then, holding the mouse button on a double-click doesn't work on my Windows guests. This method of text selection is available on several applications (like Notepad++ and most IDEs) to extend the selection on a word-by-word basis.

This doesn't seem to be a Guest Additions problem since I tried another VM with an older version of Guest Additions and I had the same problem.

Wanted to confirm that I am also seeing this on a Windows host and Ubuntu guest (14.04), and a Windows guest. I have tried changing the pointing device setting and reinstalling guest additions without effect.

I'm experiencing the same issue with VirtualBox 4.3.28 on Windows 7 with a CentOS 6 guest. I've tried both Guest Additions 4.3.28 and 5.0.0-100817 with the same result.

Confirmed on Ubuntu 14.10 host, Ubuntu 14.10 guest, VirtualBox 4.3.28. Please fix.

I'm also experiencing the same issue with 4.3.28 on Ubuntu 14.04 host and with various VM guests such as Ubuntu 14.04 & 14.10, Xubuntu 15.04 and Windows 7. In all VM's it seems that after double-clicking the mouse loses its "down" status.
Holding shift while double-clicking behaves strangely depending on the application, in gedit it expands the selection into the word being double clicked both forward and backward.
In eclipse the first click expands the selection up to the new cursor point, but the second click in double-click selects the word where the cursor used to be, but not always.

Did a quick test on an Ubuntu 15.04 host running more-or-less-5.0rc2 and double-click and hold worked as expected (except that it was the first time I heard of that trick). Observed the gedit behaviour that Bratac described in gedit on my host - perhaps that is how it is meant to be?

This seems to be fixed with the newly released 5.0-101573.

Host OS: Windows 7 64-bit Guest OS: CentOS 6.6 x86_64

Bug does not exist in 5.0-101573 (Host: Windows 8, Guest: Windows 7)

Still, a fix should be in line for future 4.x maintenance releases...

To help narrow down the search for what is wrong here, could you try out the following combinations to see what is and what is not affected?

  • VirtualBox 4.3.24 to .30 and 5.0 (including betas and release candidates)
  • on Linux and Windows hosts
  • with various Additions versions (4.3 and 5.0, and without Additions at all, with and without the absolute pointing device).
  • the Additions version does not have to match the VirtualBox version used - in fact testing unmatching versions is helpful for tracking things down.

Sorry, I know that is a bit of work, but it will make it easier to find out what is wrong, as well as if every one is really seeing the same thing here.

Seeing the same thing with Ubuntu 12 and 14, started on build 4.3.28, going back to 4.3.26 works but Mac OS seems to be more unstable with that build though.

On ubuntu it means you can't really drag windows inside ubuntu any more when this happens, (as the mouse drops straight away) it also seems to be triggered during some focus event so is fairly random but once its gone into that mode thats it. 5.0 does work though

I just upgraded from 4.3.18 to 4.3.38 on Snow Leopard and see the same issue.

@michael; Here are the combinations I tried:

VB 4.3.38, GAdd 4.3.38, Ubuntu64 Guest -> issue
VB 4.3.38, GAdd 4.3.18, Ubuntu64 Guest -> issue
VB 4.3.38, GAdd 4.3.18, Arch32 Guest   -> issue

VB 4.3.18, GAdd 4.3.38, Ubuntu64 Guest -> no issue
VB 4.3.18, GAdd 4.3.18, Ubuntu64 Guest -> no issue
VB 4.3.18, GAdd 4.3.18, Arch32 Guest   -> no issue

I am unable to test VB-5x since my machine is still running Snow Leopard (10.6).
