#14140 closed enhancement (wontfix)

"VBoxManage modifyhd --compact" does try to register the disk

Description

It seems the command "VBoxManage modifyhd --compact" tries to register the disk if a path is given which can result in a failure for example if the disk is already registered with another path (symlink). Maybe this could be changed so that modifying a virtual disk does not register it in cases where it is not needed.

I know this is a bit annoying but this is the nature of VBoxManage and not easy to change. Better use vbox-img compact to compact a disk without registering.

The command vbox-img does not exist on my system with VirtualBox being installed and informations about it seems to be relative rare on search engines. Also I can't find a package on the Ubuntu repository that contains this command. Is it even provided by the opensource part of VirtualBox?

vbox-img is part of VBox 5.0.16. Yes, it's open source. VBox 4.3 did not include vbox-img.

Thanks for the information. As I'm on VirtualBox 5.0.16 and the command is missing I have forwarded this specific issue to Launchpad.
