Extension pack installation on Ubuntu no longer prompts for root password and fails

Description
After accepting the license, the installation fails with
Failed to run /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxExtPackHelperApp --stdout /tmp/VBoxExtPackHelper-agq399/stdout --stderr /tmp/VBoxExtPackHelper-agq399/stderr --elevated install --base-dir /usr/lib/virtualbox/ExtensionPacks --cert-dir /usr/share/virtualbox/ExtPackCertificates --name 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' --tarball /home/richter/Programme/Oracle_VirtualBox/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.22.vbox-extpack --sha-256 6ba0d2f46143505f4bf8843538f773a030752c5f2f368bf862f14c9fca234c96 --replace as user root.
Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file.
Is is a regression in comparison to 4.3.20 where the root privileges where gained with gksu. Experienced on Ubuntu 14.10 amd64.
We did not change anything in this regards in VBox 4.3.22. Is gksu actually installed on your system and does it work if you call it manually?
