#13582 new defect

3D fails in Ubuntu 14.10 Guest

Reported by: markh Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 4.3.18
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

This may be related to bug https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/12941 but is with the newer release of ubuntu and verified on the latest virtualbox 4.3.18 release and a variety of guest additions (including latest 4.3.19 test).

vboxvideo fails to load either via compiz or in tests using /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test, giving the following error:

libGL error: core dri or dri2 extension not found
libGL error: failed to load driver: vboxvideo

This means that ubuntu falls back to llvmpipe rendering, so uses 100%+ CPU continuously. This is with a Window 8.1 host, ubuntu 14.10 guest (clean install from latest ubuntu ISO)

In the attached VBox.log you have:

00:00:02.855515 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VENDOR: Microsoft Corporation
00:00:02.855522 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_RENDERER: GDI Generic
00:00:02.855525 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VERSION: 1.1.0
00:00:02.855528 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_EXTENSIONS: GL_WIN_swap_hint GL_EXT_bgra GL_EXT_paletted_texture

Please check if you have properly installed host video drivers. Drivers should be properly signed. Could you please also attach VBoxStartup.log?

I do have the latest host video drivers installed, but have a fairly unusual dual-gpu setup - intel HD 4600 and Nvidia quadra K1100M (on a dell precision m3800 laptop) This now sounds similar to other reports in the forums: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=63200

I'll attach the VBoxStartup.log as well

Reverting to virtualbox 4.3.12 works around this issue - full 3d support appears to work with 4.3.12 (but not 4.3.14 or later)

(based on suggestions in the forums for similar dual gpu configurations)

I've also now managed to workaround this with newer releases by pinning virtualbox processes to the NVIDIA gpu in the nvidia control panel on the host machine, in case anyone else has the same issue.
