VM crash with 3D acceleration enabled. WinXP host Ubuntu 14.04.1 Desktop 64b guest

Description
Host: Windows XP on HP Compaq dc5750 SFF machine with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+, RAM 3 Gb, ATI Radeon X1300/X1550 Series Guest: Ubuntu 14.04.1 Desktop 64b Guest additions installed 4.3.14
After installing guest additions and reboot the VM, the VirtualBox process on host crashes after login screen at guest with no error dialog messages.
Disabling 3D acceleration the issue disappear but the VM is, of course, so slow that is unusable.

I'm seeing the same behavior here.
Host: Windows 8.1 x64 i7-4702HQ, NVIDIA
Guest: Ubuntu 14.04 (just upgraded from 12 and installed guest additions)
Does not throw the error when 3D acceleration is disabled.
