VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT when booting 10.6 guest on newer Mac hosts

Reported by: cdepner Owned by:
Component: host support Version: VirtualBox 4.3.12
Keywords: osx 10.6 guru triple fault Cc:
Guest type: OSX Server Host type: Mac OS X

Description

When attempting to boot a 10.6 guest on newer Mac hardware (i.e. hardware that did not ship with 10.6), I get the following GURU MEDITATION (full log also attached):

00:00:07.183612 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 00:00:07.183613 !! 00:00:07.183614 !! Guru Meditation 1155 (VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT) 00:00:07.185451 !! 00:00:07.185512 !! Skipping ring-0 registers and stack, rcErr=VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT 00:00:07.185525 !! 00:00:07.185526 !! {mappings, <NULL>} 00:00:07.185527 !! 00:00:07.185543 00:00:07.185544 The mappings are DISABLED.

I am currently unable to create or run 10.6 based VMs in VirtualBox on newer hardware, such as a 13" Retina MacBook Pro (2013), but the exact same VM boots fine on an older Mac Pro 3,1.

Using VMware Fusion as a comparison, I was able to run a VM (since it was using a VMDK disk) exhibiting this issue just fine.

Steps to repro:

1) Launch VirtualBox 4.3.12 2) Create new VM: Mac OS X Snow Leopard 64-bit 3) Attach Snow Leopard install media DMG to DVD drive and set boot order appropriately 4) boot VM

Results: very early in the boot process, I get a Guru Meditation error: VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT

VBox.log attached.

Tried a lot of the suggestions floating around, such as disabling nested paging, etc, and I always get the error.

Actually this occurs with a Lion VM as well, so I've attached a VBox.log from that failure too.

Having the same issue myself. Using a Early 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.4 trying to install a retail version of Snow Leopard. On booting I get a critical error pop up. The log contains the VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT signature. Will attached for reference. I'm running VirtualBox 4.3.14 r95030. Created the virtual machine by choosing a Type of "Mac OS X" and Version of "Mac OS X (32 bit)". I get the same issue if I choose "Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (32 bit)" as the Type.

btw - this seems like a dup, of very similar to ticket #12951.

@mcandre

Did you read the title of the ticket? It's about new Macs trying to run old OSX versions. You are trying to run 10.13, no connection whatsoever!!!

Please open a new thread in the Mac OS X Guests section of the forums.
