Gnome Shell Dash Icon-text Drop Shadow Distorted / Skewed

Reported by: phearus Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 4.3.10
Keywords: Gnome skewed text-shadow Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Mac OS X

Description

There is an issue with how VirtualBox renders Gnome-Shell dash icon-text drop-shadows.

The text drop-shadow seems to be offset towards the left of the screen and further skewed / distorted and offset in this direction. See attached images for examples.

This issue can be seen across many different Linux installs, for example Ubuntu Gnome 12.04 (x86-64) with Gnome Shell 3.4, Arch Linux x86_64 with Gnome Shell 3.14, on the host systems: Arch Linux x86_64, Mac-OSX 10.6+ - 10.9.3, and Windows 7.

Note: This issue can also be seen on VirtualBox 4.x releases prior to 4.3.10.

Not sure how this is related but the problem exists in two places that I find annoying. The first is in an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS system where I use Gnome Shell v3.10.4. The drop shadows are distorted on the screen with the clock before getting to the login screen and the login screen has issues too. The second issue is when editing VirtualBox appliance properties. For example, when importing an appliance I change the installation path. When I modify the path the text changes but the drop shadow doesn't, making impossible to read the new text. I've seen this in other places but can't remember where. My hosts run OpenSuSE 13.2 and OpenSuSE 42.1 with the latest NVidia drivers. So, in my case I'm seeing problems with drop shadows on the host and guest and they may not be related to one another. I though it was a Gnome or video driver issue but found this post in a google search so I'm letting you know.
