Description
Hello,
Starting from the launch of the 4.3.x branch there seem to be serious problems with the stability of the guests. In my case I get a lot of crashes with Windows 7 (32 bit) and Windows 2008R2 guests on my host; I tried using all the 3.11.x, 3.12.x and 3.13.x kernel versions on my host but the result is invariably the same - BSOD or sudden reset of the guest VM. I disabled 3D, 2D acceleration, tried IDE or SATA controllers, used 1 or 2 VCPUs, enabled or disabled the USB controller ...
Unfortunately, the guests are simply not reliable any more! Going to older versions seems to stabilise the same guests - had used them for days without any sort of crash; going back to the 4.3.x branch will immediately display the behavior described.
What intrigues me is the presence of the following lines in the logs:
... AHCI#0: Reset the HBA Reset initiated by ACPI ...
I will upload some of the logs and also some of the dump files.
Is this a known bug, a configuration-specific bug or a new one?
Best regards, Marian

Please do also add a VBox.log file of a VM session when you executed the same guest with VBox 4.2.x. And no, this is not a known bug.

Hi Frank,
I just added a log obtained from the Win2008R2 guest as follows:
- installed VB 4.2.22
- launched VM with the previous 4.3.6 additions still installed; the crash was quick ...
- next I uninstalled the 4.3.6 additions and launched the VM without any additions (I also removed the "Program File\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions" folder); could not have the VM crash in any way
- next I installed the 4.2.22 additions, selecting the Direct3D support and responding NO to "install basic Direct3D support" message prompt
- after the reboot, the crash came quickly
What can I do next to provide you useful information?
Best regards, Marian

In other words you see these crashes only if you install the VirtualBox Guest Additions but not if the Guest Additions are not installed, regardless if you use VBox 4.2.22 or 4.3.6, is that correct?

Hi Frank,
This week-end I tried the following:
- uninstalled VB 4.2.22
- installed VB 4.3.6
- uninstalled additions and removed "Program File\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions" folder
- installed the aditions but without 3D support (default settings)
Since then, I was unable to crash the VMs!
Definitely there seem to be a problem with 3D support DLLs when installed, even though the 3D and 2D acceleration settings are disabled in the VM configuration.
This means that for the time being 3D has a big problem ! What can I do next? Would you like to investigate further?
Best regards, Marian

Could you check if VBox 4.3.8 brings any improvement? Please do also update the Guest Additions.

Replying to frank:

Hello Franck,
I performed the following test:
- uninstalled the version 4.3.6
- installed 4.3.8
- removed additions (no "Program File\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions" xas left behind)
- rebooted
- installed 4.3.8 additions with full 3D support
- rebooted after having enabled 2d and 3D acceleration in VM settings
- I obtained a crash in about a couple of minutes (see W2k8R2_x64-2014-02-27-23-16-28.log)
- rebooted after disabling 2D and 3D in VM settings
- I obtained again a crash in about a couple of minutes (see W2k8R2_x64-2014-02-27-23-31-01.log)
- I uninstalled the additions and rebooted again
- I installed the additions without D support (default proposed install settings)
- rebooted after enabling 2D in VM settings
- VM is stable again (please see W2k8R2_x64-2014-02-27-23-38-18.log)
I joined also a zip file containing the minidump files.
Would you need some other kind of logs/information?
Best regards, Marian
