After updating VirtualBox to 4.3.4-91027, I'm unable to restore a saved state in the background (clicking while holding shift). This problem also exists after updating to 4.3.6-91406. There is no problem in restoring the same saved state in the forground.

The virtual machine I have is a linked clone.

You configured your guest to use 3D acceleration. If you start the VM with the normal GUI ('in the foreground' in your terms) then the VM will run with 3D acceleration enabled. If you then start the same VM with VBoxHeadless ('in the background'), 3D acceleration is not available but the guest expects to use that feature. Therefore you are not able to start your guest. I don't think this is a regression. If you disable 3D for your guest you will be able to save the state from a normal GUI session and restore it with VBoxHeadless.

I am having a similar problem, but it does not appear to be solved by disabling 3D acceleration. I can save and restore my VM in headless mode as much as a like, but once I have restored it in normal (GUI) mode, it will no longer restore in headless mode. The only way to run it in headless mode is to restore it in GUI mode, shut it down, and reboot it in headless mode.

jonathan1, please attach a VBox.log file of such a VM session, preferable when running from the GUI.

I am having this problem with 2D acceleration. When I start a VM with saved state, VBox drops me this error about VGA. If I remove the saved state from the VM, it starts correctly. It only happens when I enter to the VBhost using Remote Desktop and I try to start the VM. If I try it without RDP it starts perfectly with saved state.

Solved with 4.3.10 for 3D and 2D starting a VM with saved state via RDP. Thanks Oracle.
