Cannot run virtual machine from arbitrary location

Due to the removal of the ability to add vhd files with the virtual media manager, I can no longer see how it is possible to run a virtual machine in place from just a .vbox file and the vhd anymore. This was extremely useful for running VMs from removable media

In previous versions it was possible by first adding the vhd file though virtual media manager (by drag and drop) then opening the .vbox file. In the latest version media cannot be added through dragging it to the media manager, so trying to add the machine by opening the .vbox file fails (could not find hard disk with uuid ...)

Please reopen if still relevant with a recent VirtualBox release.
