USB hard drive crashes VirtualBox

Description

I have a Seagate Backup+ Desk 4TB USB 3 drive, which works fine in both host and guest systems over USB 2, but has problems over USB 3. Seagate determined the drive was bad, so they sent me a replacement.

The new drive works fine in the host on USB 3, but doesn't work with VirtualBox at all.

Scenario 1:

  1. Plug in drive
  2. Unmount in OS X
  3. Start up guest system (Windows 7).
  4. The disk is grayed out in USB devices menu.

Scenario 2:

  1. Add USB filter for the disk in machine settings
  2. Unplug drive
  3. Start up guest system
  4. Plug in drive
  5. It mounts in host system
  6. At this point, VirtualBox acts really weird. USB devices list says "no USB devices connected". Machine settings window is completely gray. About window says "version r0". Shutting down guest gives error: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED. Power off doesn't work either; I have to force quit.
