4.3.0, Win8 guest, 3D + GAs causes blank screen in guest

Description

I updated to VB 4.3.0. In the process of updating my Win8 VM, it booted but at the startup screen I got a flashing view of the normal screen and then... "blank".

  • Booted with 4.2.18 GAs -> Blank screen.
  • Disabled 3D in VB -> It works.
  • Uninstalled GAs from guest -> It works.
  • Uninstalled GAs + 3D enabled -> It works.
  • Installed 4.3.0 GAs -> Blank screen.

Note: Knowing the startup process of Win8, I dragged the screen to the top, entered my password and got in OK to the tiles and then to my desktop. Hitting the "Windows" key twice toggles between blank screen and desktop. I tried to make a video out of it but it comes up black...

I have not updated my VM snapshot, it is still with 4.2.18 additions in case you want me to try out something. Host is OSX 10.6.8.

Still there with 4.3.4...

Still there with 4.3.6... I'm starting to wonder why nobody else has seen this. Maybe I have some misconfiguration?

comment:4 by Frank Mehnert, 10 years ago

Might be related to your host graphics drivers and graphics hardware.

comment:5 by Frank Mehnert, 10 years ago

Also, did you upgrade your GA to 4.3.6?

OK, I've uploaded a couple of 3gp videos (because of size constraints) that show the problems with 4.3.x GAs and the WDDM drivers. The webm video comes up black, so you can't see anything.

Win8-4.3.6.3gp: Starting up with 4.3.6 GAs. Briefly opening screen appears, I drag the screen upwards, enter my password, flashes of the login process, normal screen comes up.

Win7-4.3.6.3gp: Rebooting causes the screen to go haywire. Booting does not.

The logs and showvminfo are self-explanatory. The "Win7-4.3.4.log" is from when booting with 4.3.4 GAs, installing 4.3.6 GAs and rebooting. The "Win7-4.3.6.log" is from a clean boot with GAs 4.3.6 installed already.

I mistakenly uploaded Win8-4.3.6.log twice and I can't remove it. Bummer... If anyone can, please remove "Win8-4.3.6.2.log".

Frank, let me know either here or via PM if you need anything more. Oh, one last thing. Host's hardware: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i7-2.3-17-early-2011-unibody-thunderbolt-specs.html with 16GB or RAM.

Hi, this is most likely your GPU-specific issue. Does 4.3.8 host and 4.3.8 GA make any difference?
What was the last version host/GA that worked for you?

comment:9 by Socratis, 10 years ago

Yes, 4.3.8 made things worse. Now even my Linux guests are affected. All of them.

The problems started appearing around the 4.3.0 beta and they kept on getting worse. I went back to 4.2.16 and 4.2.18 and there are some really minor glitches, 4.2.20 there are definite Glitches and 4.2.22 has really major issues (can't work on it). The corruption seems to happen at a low level (GPU) because I can't even take a screenshot of the guest. Everything appears black at the screenshot. I'm attaching my glxinfo output in case it helps.

I have very similar problems. Win 8.1 hosted on Fedora 19, working well only if 3D accelleration in VM configuration is set off. The same was with Windows 8.0 (before upgrading to Widows 8.1).

Also the new MS Office 2013 had problems as it depends on 3D API.

Today I moved from VB 4.3.6 to 4.3.8. Upgrading VB additions was a nightmare - it crashed my Windows everytime while installing WDDM drivers and left it unusable (needed to revert to last windows working state or to a snapshot). Solution was:

  • remove additions and stop the guest
  • set 3D on in the guest configuration
  • start guest and install additions, reboot

Now I am just using it for about 30 minutes, but it's working, even with 3D enabled.

My GPU: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12), driver i915

Hope this can help.

I have the same issue when running WinXP and 64 bit Win 7 guests in VB 4.3.8 in 64 bit Ubuntu Linux 12.04.

HI

I've just upgraded from 4.2 to 4.3. I have 1 Win 7 guest running on Linux Mint 14 Nadia.

The Win 7 booted and I then upgraded the add ons. Upon reboot all I got was a black screen. I could not do anything. Even sending a shutdown signal did not work. I had to force stop and then boot after reading that a fresh boot rather than a reboot enables the screen.

Same problem, tried many things, no solution yet.

Using vbox 4.3.28 on ubuntu, i have a windows 8.1 as a virtual machine.

I cannot enable 3d acceleration and Guest additions together, GA is also latest. Tried to install all in many different orders, nothing changed I always have black screen before login screen of windows 8.1 on virtualbox with GA and 3D. Please help me.

I have installed that virtual machine when I had 4.3.12 or earlier versiion of vbox, then upgraded the vbox, also at that time 3d acceleration was not working, it was set and GA was installed but it was not working. Please help me guys, i need to get it work.

I was having this same issue running VBox Version 4.3.28 on a Dell Latitude E6540 laptop.

I was able to solve the issue after realizing this machine has dual video cards and tries to select which video card to run an application on. It appears the drivers were not selecting the video card properly.

Forcing the drivers to run Virtualbox on the ATI videocard (instead of the HD4600)appears to have solved the video corruption issue.

Most likely this is the same problem as in ticket #14670. Please try VirtualBox build mentioned there.
