Win 8 (64bit) boots to a totally black screen

Description
Host: opensuse v12.3; linux 3.7.10-1.16-desktop x86_64; Guest: win 8 64 bit
I updated to VB 4.2.16 and extension pack, from v4.2.12. Started the Win8 VM and after the initial logo and spinny thing, the Win8 VM window resizes, goes black and stays that way forever. It does load the Guest Additions at some point.
Previously, I had thought that after waiting an hour and Win8 finally started, that it all would be well henceforth. Not so. The next day I started Win8, waited an hour, nothing but black. The CPU usage (using a linux monitor) was sporadic the whole time, varying between 20% and 75% overall; Win8 was thrashing about something. I am inclined to doubt that this is normal Win8 behavior.
WinXP works fine. OS/2 works fine.

Please reopen if still relevant with VBox 4.3.2.
Log file from latest attempt to start win8. Screen was black for an hour.
