group ownership problem

Reported by: Volker Jahns Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 1.5.4
Keywords: group ownership Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: other

Description

Starting VirtualBox ( Version 1.5.4 on Debian Lenny, Kernel 2.6.22-3-686 ) issues a warning message:

volker@eos ~ > VirtualBox
WARNING: You are not a member of the "vboxusers" group. Please add yourself
to this group before starting VirtualBox.

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

volker is member of vboxusers

volker@eos ~ > id volker
uid=xxx(volker) ...,1001(vboxusers),...

/dev/vboxdrv exists and is group writeable

volker@eos ~ > ls -l /dev/vboxdrv
crw-rw---- 1 root vboxusers 10, 62 2008-02-13 21:31 /dev/vboxdrv

As a consequence starting a virtual machine in VirtualBox will throw an error. It is not possible to start a virtual machine.

N.B. this system is integrated into NIS/automounter environment.

Workaround:

change ownership of /dev/vboxdrv to volker.

Is this the binary version from our websites or is this the OSE version from Debian?

Please, help yourself

volker@eos tmp > cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://www.virtualbox.org/debian etch non-free

I take it you did try logging out and back in again after adding yourself to the vboxusers group? This is required on Linux systems.
