authentication is ignored: login only works without credentials

Description
I just set up an instance of VBox on a FreeBSD 8.3 host to run a Linux guest, and wanted to access it from OS X using Screen Sharing (Apple's version of VNC). I could connect to the host on port 3389 but it took me awhile to realize that the authentication I had enabled based on this page http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch07.html#vbox-auth was meaningless: no password was required.
