Installers 4.2.10 and 4.2.8 failing on Vbox update

Virtual Box notified me of a newer version. I clicked the link, downloaded it, ran the installer, everything was fine until the last step, where it said Installation Failed. I tried again, same thing. I repaired permissions and tried again, same thing. I tried downloading and installing 4.2.8, same problem. I finally reverted to the version I had archived, 4.2.4. However, now that I have reverted, the USB 2.0 subsystem appears to be failing, and the only Oracle VM Extension Packs available for download are only compatible with the versions of VirtualBox that are not installing!

Console.app says something about can't load a kext

I am having the same issue too upgrading from 4.2.4 to 4.2.16 and 4.2.18

Eventually I ran the uninstall script, then ran the installer again, and it worked. But for info:

Have this problem since upgrading to 4.2.18. All previous versions of 4.2 worked so smoothly, thought I'd simply forgotten how to install the extensions... Uninstalled, re-installed, all to no avail. Today, as part of testing on bug 11422, I installed VirtualBox-4.3.0_RC1-89687-Linux_amd64.run which is puzzling...

I was able to install the extensions in a Windows XP VM; but Windows 7 VM silently fails to install, and the tray icon displays tool tip "... 4.2.18r88780".

Trying to install extensions via File->Preferences->Extensions fails (screenshot attached as VBoxExtensionInstallFailure.png).
