Heavy USB usage freezes guest OS

Reported by: turner Owned by:

Description

Guest running linux 32bit, host running Win7 64bit.

Heavy usage of the USB bus leads to an unresponsive guest

I am attempting to "clone" a number of partition on a virtual disk onto a USB external harddrive for use in a real system. I use a temporary RAID1 (with no metadata) to copy the partitions at block level over to the usb. This works very well on a real system and the copy is as fast as it gets (lowest level of operations).

However, it takes less than a minute to become "not responding" when done in a vbox. At that point the activity on the external drive ceases and CPU usage from the guest is almost constant at 50%. Unplugging the usb disk afterwards does not change anything either.

This can be reproduced 100% of times.

The last line in the log shows when I plugged the usb device, but nothing else.

I have just performed the same procedure (copying ~16GB data using software raid) and the only difference is I used another VDI as destination.
