Setvideomodehint does not save the setting for vm's created with 4.2

Description
I 've noticed that setvideomodehint, although it works fine when issued for an active vm, it doesn't save the setting afterwards and the setting is lost after I poweroff the vm. So, it has to be issued every time the vm is run. This is an issue I'm facing in new vm's created with vbox 4.2. All vm's created with previous versions are working fine with 4.2.

The video mode hint itself was never stored by the VM. It will be always stored by the VirtualBox Guest Additions graphics driver. So I assume that you are talking about a Linux guest with Guest Additions 4.2.0. Which Linux distribution (your guest!) is that in particular and please add a VBox.log file of a VM session with such a guest.
