Ticket #10539 (closed defect: obsolete)
Crash on resolution change
Reported by: | Superlexx | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 4.1.14 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Windows |
Description
When changing guest resolution by resizing its window, the VirtualBox process sometimes crashes (access violation, apparently "use after free" issue). Minidump and log are attached. I also have a full dump (bigger than 1GiB, so will only upload when requested).
Reason might be same as for #8380

I have this problem on 4.2.4 with a Windows 7 host and Ubuntu 12 guest, in fact it happens more often than it did with the 4.1.x series.
I have attached the vbox log for the latest occurrence.
I have two external screens attached to my laptop which is normally in a dock and closed. One screen is horizontal and one vertical. When I boot ubuntu it does not come up using all of the real estate. I use a combination of Control G and Control L to make it detect the actual screen size and resize to fill it. Sometimes this crashes vbox, sometimes it works. If I manually resize a window using the "full screen" button on the top right, that always crashes vbox. Also, grabbing and dragging the border of the window to resize also always crashes vbox.
When I de-dock the laptop, it then has one screen which is a different size than either connected external screen. It usually does not crash when de-docking, but sometimes does when docking again.

We just fixed a bug which could lead to crashes if multi-monitor guests were resized. The fix will be part of the next maintenance release.

Could you check if this problem is fixed for you in VBox 4.2.8?

This is still happening using windows 8 and VBox 4.2.14 on Mac/mountain-lion host.
Regression maybe?
Reproduction steps: In full screen windows 8 using Oracles host drivers, move from full screen to window mode using ctl F.

Same thing happening on Windows 8 host with Windows XP guest. Log attached. Open Suse guest on same host does not seem to have the same problem.
