USB tremendously slow on the guest

Description
Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) host Windows 7 64bit guest
Copy files on the guest from a USB pen drive to the guest's C:\ disk
It is slow in a manner than even the virtualization overhead cannot possibly justify.
More than half an hour to copy about 500 MB.
