VMC was never ever supported by VirtualBox, so no one will be able to 
follow what you're talking about. Until VirtualBox 3.2 VM configs had a 
.xml extension, and since 4.0 they have a .vbox extension.

The only time we dropped support for old VM configs was in VirtualBox 
3.2 - it supports configs created by VirtualBox 2.0 and later. If you 
have some really ancient VM configs you need to temporarily install 
VirtualBox 2.0, and just start the GUI. This will convert the VM configs 
to the 2.0 format, which is accepted by all recent VirtualBox versions. 
Then you can upgrade again...
